Backyard Pool Design: L-shaped Pool to Fully Utilise the Space

The unusual trapezoidal shape of this backyard presented the opportunity to provide the client with an L-shaped concrete pool that fully utilises the space available. Building on the unusual shapes, distinctive feature walls of the different heights and materials provide subtle eye-catching focal points, located diagonally across the garden from the main entertaining area, appear to increase the apparent size of the garden.

The clients were undertaking extensive renovations of their home, which included a cabana, and wanted to create a relaxed family friendly pool and garden area. As the backyard was small, careful considerations of the location of the pass was required to maximise available space and to provide seamless integration of the home, the entertaining area and the pool.

The dominant feature wall, constructed of masonry block, is clad in large format porcelain tiles. Three custom fabricated water spouts, located centrally to the uppermost tile, spill back onto the swimout located under the feature wall, creating a great water play area for children and masking intrusive neighbourhood sounds.

The cabana, with a barbeque and eating area, was designed to reflect the modern extension to the rear of the home and to provide protection from the sun.

Timber decking extending from the house provides a seamless integration with the pool. An inbuilt day bed becomes the perfect spot to relax with a drink and a good book.

The soft pastel blue of the pool’s water perfectly complements the relaxed resort feel of the backyard design and the use of blue filters to the pool lighting enhances an intensifies the colour.
